Types Of Cement Boards

 

Cement boards differ in terms of bonds and properties. Choices include: calcium aluminate and carbon bonds, Portland cement bonds, phosphates, slag cement. Products with sulfate, sulfur, and polymer bonds are also available. Polymer-modified Portland cement provides improved plasticity and water resistance. Polymer cement boards are used with corrosion-resistant tile, brick, or other masonry. Acrylate, epoxy, polyurethane, polyester, and vinyl ester provide additional choices. Cement boards that use specialized or proprietary bond types are also available.

Safety Tips And Tricks Of Install Cement Board

 

Invest in protective gear
Do not skip buying protective gear for your project in an effort to cut costs. Dust from thinset mortar and cutting the cement boards can be very hazardous to your health if inhaled. Particles in the dust can also irritate your eyes. When shopping for supplies, be sure to include a mask or respirator, eyewear and gloves to keep the exposed skin on your hands safe from thinset. If you choose to invest in high-quality protective gear, you can reuse these tools again for future projects without needing to repurchase anything.

Always follow manufacturer instructions
Always read all manufacturer instructions before beginning any project. That includes the instructions listed on the bag of thinset mortar, as well as any instructions that come packaged with your cement boards. Each manufacturer produces products differently from the next, so never assume there is a “one size fits all” method for cement board installation. By reading these instructions before you start your project, you minimize the chance of running into costly or time-wasting roadblocks.

Operate tools with care

Composition of Cement Board

 

Cement bonded particle boards have treated wood flakes as reinforcement, whereas cement fibre boards have cellulose fibre, which is a plant extract as reinforcement. Cement acts as binder in both the cases. The fire resistance properties of cement bonded blue particle boards and cement fibre boards are the same. In terms of load-bearing capacity, cement-bonded particle boards have higher capacity than cement fibre boards. Cement particle boards are manufactured from 1⁄4 to 1+9⁄16 inches (6 to 40 mm) thickness making it suitable for high load bearing applications.

These boards are made of a homogeneous mixture and hence are formed as single layer for any thickness. Cement fibre boards are more used in decorative applications and can be manufactured from 1⁄8 to 13⁄16 inch (3 to 20 mm) thickness. Fibre boards are made in very thin layers, making it extremely difficult to manufacture high thickness boards. Many manufacturers use additives like mica, aluminium stearate and cenospheres in order to achieve certain board qualities. Typical cement fiber board is made of approximately 40-60% of cement, 20-30% of fillers, 8-10% of cellulose, 10-15% of mica. Other additives like above mentioned aluminium stearate and PVA are normally used in quantities less than 1%. Cenospheres are used only in low density boards with quantities between 10 and 15%. The actual recipe depends on available raw materials and other local factors.

How To Install Cement Board On Walls

Assess The Substrate

For highly wet areas, such as showers and bathtub surrounds, cement board typically is attached directly over the wall studs, although the studs may be covered with an intervening moisture membrane. (some cement board products may not require the underlying membrane if the seams are properly waterproofed.)

Place The Cement Boards

Stagger the cement boards on the wall, making sure that four corners never meet. Avoid forcing the boards together. A slight gap will compensate for the expansion and contraction of base materials and studs. Similarly, avoid forcing the edges of cement boards against floors, ceilings, or other surrounding areas.

Screw The Boards In Place

Screw the cement boards onto the wall, placing the screws every 8 inches. Every stud that runs behind or along the perimeter of a cement board must be fastened to the board.

Tape The Joints

Apply fiberglass mesh tape on top of all seams. Wherever tape strips meet, be sure to overlap them slightly. Avoid doubling-up tape as much as possible.

Fill The Joints

Use the drywall knife to apply thinset mortar to all taped joints. Force the mortar through the holes in the mesh tape. Run the knife along the top of the seam to even it out on each side.

Feather The Joints

If there are humps of thinset mortar, feather the mortar out across the board. The cement boards must be as flat as possible for correct tile installation. To feather, begin the knife on the highest area, then drag the knife, gradually reducing the amount of mortar.

How To Clean Cement Board

 
As always, it is important to use appropriate safety apparel during cleaning. Always wear protective eyewear, gloves and respiratory protection. Depending on what debris is being cleaned from the siding, breathing in particles or debris coming in contact with your skin or eyes can be very dangerous. Always err on the side of caution when protecting yourself from dust, mold or mildew. As well as protecting yourself during the cleaning process, be sure to cover any landscaping or plants. Using a thin poly or tarp will work fine. Just make sure your perennials and annuals are well protected from any spray or splatter of debris.

After you’ve read up on the specific precautions to take with your product, it’s time to gather your tools. One of the most important things to remember is to never use a hard or abrasive brush. Using an abrasive scrub brush or sponge could damage the finish or siding. Recommended tools for removing any type of construction or cutting debris, dirt and chalk can be easily accomplished with an this method and with the following tools and solution. In this case, we’ll only be using water as our solution to clean the siding. Simply brush the siding with the soft brush to free the surface of the culprit you’re trying to clean. Then, rinse with the garden hose. If using a soft cloth to remove the debris, with a wet cloth, wipe the siding clean and rinse with clean water. Change the cloth or rinse it often if there a lot of debris builds up on the rag.

The recommended tools for removing any type of oil, grease or other non-chemical debris combined with a simple solution creates for an even simpler cleaning process. We’ll be using a simple solution of a mild liquid dishwashing soap. Just like you should never use an abrasive brush, never use any harsh chemicals to clean your siding. To clean your siding, wet your soft cloth with soapy water. Apply to the siding and use your water hose to rinse the area. The last contaminant you may need to remove from your siding is the dreaded mold and mildew. Mold and mildew thrive in moist, humid environments.
